As far as desserts go, I will choose a fruit-based treat every single time. And if it is warm and topped with ice cream, it isn’t even a competition. Cobblers, crisp and fruit crumbles have always been my favorite.

This Mixed Berry Crisp with Oatmeal Crumble Topping is perfect for summer. It is easy and aside from the fruit it uses basic pantry staples you may already have on hand.

This is an easy base recipe to switch up based on what fruit you have on hand. I used a mixture of blueberries and blackberries, but cherries would also work well too. Whatever fruit you choose, just make sure you don’t forget the ice cream!

Ingredients for Mixed Berry Crisp

This is a healthier berry crisp with a minimal amount of sugar in it (the fresh berries are already nice and sweet, after all!). Here’s what you’ll need to make this recipe:

  • Fresh blueberries
  • Fresh blackberries
  • Granulated sugar
  • Brown sugar
  • Cornstarch
  • Old-fashioned oats
  • All-purpose flour
  • Chopped pecans
  • Butter

How to Make Mixed Berry Crisp

Fruit crisps are incredibly easy to prepare and they’re pretty much impossible to mess up! Here are the basic steps to making this healthier berry crisp:

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the berries, sugar, and cornstarch.
  2. Grab a large cast iron skillet or deep dish pie pan and spray with cooking oil. Pour berries into the pan.
  3. Wipe your mixing bowl clean and combine the oats, flour, pecans and brown sugar.
  4. Cut in the butter with a pastry cutter or use your hands to blend in the butter.
  5. Pour the oatmeal topping over your berries, making sure to distribute it evenly.
  6. Bake for 20 minutes at 350ºF and serve warm with ice cream.

Can I Use Different Berries?

Yes! You’re welcome to use any mixture of berries that you’d like. You can use up to 4 cups of berries total.

Can I Use Frozen Berries?

Most likely, yes. However, frozen berries tend to release a lot of moisture once baked so you may want to add an extra tablespoon of cornstarch to the berry filling.

Tips for Making a Berry Crisp

  • For a gluten-free berry crisp, use a gluten-free flour and certified gluten-free oats.
  • Do not substitute instant oats in this recipe. The topping must be made with old-fashioned (rolled) oats.
  • To make this dessert lower carb, use swerve sweetener instead of regular sugar.
