Strip the carpets
Carpets can make a home cosy – but they have the disadvantage of being harder to clean than other flooring options. Animal fur can be hard to get out of them and liquid spillages can easily cause permanent stains.
By opting for wooden floors or tiles, you can make it easier to keep your floor clean. Rather than having to get the vacuum cleaner out, you can easily sweep and mop these surfaces. Just make sure any wooden floors are laminated and that any tiled floors are sealed so that they are water-proof and scratch resistant.
If you’d prefer to keep you carpets, you may be able to consider the alternative option of carpet tiles. An advantage of carpet tiles is that you can easily replace single tiles that get stained – you won’t have to invest in a carpet cleaning machine, nor will you have to replace the entire carpet, potentially helping you to save money.
Lay down some rugs and mats
Another option could be to lay down rugs and mats in areas that are more mess-prone. These rugs or mats can then be cleaned individually whilst preserving the floor underneath.
Rugs are commonly placed below sofas and dining tables for this reason – these tend to be areas in which crumbs and spillages are most likely to collect. Mats meanwhile can be places in front of doors or below high chairs.
Use scrubbable paint
Once kids start walking, they may start putting their sticky fingers on walls – or worse they may discover the joy of scribbling on walls with pens. You may find regular wall paint hard to clean, which is why it may be beneficial to upgrade to a specialist scrubbable paint such as Dulux EasyClean. Marks should scrub straight off, helping you to keep your walls looking pristine.
Upgrade your upholstery
When it comes to sofas and armchairs, certain materials are likely to be easier to clean than others. The best material for your needs may depend on your circumstances (i.e. is it pets or kids that are causing the mess?).
If it’s largely food spillages and baby sick that you want to protect your upholstery from, leather may be the best choice of material. Such spillages can easily be wiped off. Leather may still stain if substances are left on there for a long time – opting for dark leather may hide these stains.
As for cleaning up animal hair, microfiber materials such as denim or canvas are a good choice. Whilst leather can also be a good choice, animal claws may cause it to scratch easily. Microfiber materials meanwhile are more resistant to scratch damage, whilst still being easy to clean.
There could also be the option of using a slipcover on your upholstery. These are sheets of fabric that fit over the top of your sofa or armchair. Many slipcovers such as these ones found at Kirkdale are machine washable, making it easy to clean them whenever they get stained. A slipcover could even be used to hide an old stained sofa.
Put furniture on legs/castors
When vacuuming/sweeping/mopping, one of the biggest inconveniences can be having to move out furniture to get behind. Putting furniture on legs allows you to easily get beneath furniture and clean up any dirt or debri.
Castors are another option which could make cleaning even easier. These allow you to wheel furniture around so that you can more easily get to corners and walls behind.
Splash out on a new kitchen sink/taps
You may also be able to make washing up easier by upgrading your sink and taps. Some old sink materials can be fairly porous, often containing microscopic holes that can collect grease and grime. Stainless steel is often the best material for easy cleaning. Rounded corners can meanwhile also make cleaning easier as tight corners are more likely to collect food.
As for your kitchen taps, consider a pull-down tap. These taps work much like shower heads in that they can be easily manoeuvred allowing you to get into the corners of your sink and wash the inside of pots more easily.
Invest in a dishwasher
There’s also the option of buying a dishwasher. If you currently wash up plates and cutlery by hand, investing in a dishwasher could help to free up this task.
It’s worth paying a little extra for a good quality of dishwasher that is more likely to thoroughly clean your dishes. The quality of your dishwasher detergent also makes a big impact – a good detergent such as Lemi Shine will improve the effectiveness of each wash. Make sure to also keep your dishwasher maintained and get any faults fixed early.
Buy an air purifier
Air purifiers can help to improve the air quality inside your home. This could include cleaning up dust in the air, helping to prevent dust build-up on surfaces in your home. Air purifiers also help to remove toxins and allergens from the air, helping to keep your home a healthier place.
You can shop for air purifiers at sites like Winix. Generally speaking, more expensive air purifiers will be more effective.
Install extractor fans
Extractor fans can allow you to ventilate your home without having to open windows and let in outdoor dust and dirt. If you live on a busy road, having extractor fans in your home could be important for preventing dust build-up from exhaust fumes (especially in rooms like the bathroom where dust will show up more easily and the kitchen where cleanliness of the utmost importance). Extractor fans are also important in home workshops for getting rid of sawdust and other debri.
Increase your home’s storage space
Storage space is important for keeping on top of clutter build-up. Not only will clutter make your home look messy, but it can also make it harder to clean as you have more stuff to dust and vacuum around.
Common sources of clutter include toys, clothes, kitchen utensils, toiletries and collectibles. Make sure that you have containers to fit these items in so that they’re not just sitting somewhere loose.
There are lots of creative ways to increase your home’s storage space without having to sacrifice floor space with extra cabinets and containers. For example, you may be able to incorporate storage into other furniture – there are beds and sofas with in-built storage that can be great extra ways of hiding clutter. You may also be able to hang items on walls using hooks or shelves.
