Keto Salad Bowl
If you enjoy those big salad bowls at restaurants (like a fried tortilla in the shape of a bowl), you are going to LOVE this keto chaffle bowl full of delicious, nutritious veggies and juicy chicken! We’ve been making these chaffle bowls nonstop (see how we used them for breakfast and taco night already). This is a great recipe for meal prep as every component can be prepared ahead of time, perfect for preparing lunches for the week!
What is a chaffle? How do you make it into a bowl?!
Keto chaffles are essentially “cheese waffles” made mostly from eggs and cheese. This creates a low-carb and gluten-free snack, but I originally found them to be a little too eggy and dense for me. After a little experimentation, we discovered that adding a little almond flour and baking powder improves the texture and flavor for all kinds of new recipes!

While chaffles can be made in any waffle iron, it’s common to see recipes using the Dash Mini Waffle Maker because it’s 4-inch size is perfect for snacking and making sandwiches. Dash created this handy little Mini Waffle BOWL Maker, now, and that’s how we got this cute, versatile keto bowl! These are quite tiny, but that’s perfect for kids, sides, and controlling portion sizes.
Ingredients
As always, here is a quick overview of the ingredients used in our keto Salad Bowl. For the complete recipe and measurements, simply scroll to the bottom of the page for the printable recipe card.
Chaffle bowl:
- Eggs – I used large eggs and have never tried any substitutions.
- Shredded cheese – You can use any shredded cheese you prefer, but I tend to use mozzarella for the most versatile bowls. Feel free to use cheddar cheese, gouda, even pepper jack for a little spice!
- Almond flour and baking powder – Adds lift, provides a neutral flavor, and helps make the chaffle bowl more sturdy.
Keto salad:
- Salad greens – Use any type you like! Butter, iceberg, kale, romaine lettuce, any salads greens will work.
- Cooked chicken – I sliced up some leftover grilled chicken, but feel free to use whatever you have on hand! This would also be a great recipe for leftover turkey, ham, rotisserie chicken, steak, shrimp, or other proteins.
- Tomato, bacon, Ranch dressing, kosher salt, and black pepper – Feel free to use your favorite salad toppings instead! Adding diced cucumber, sliced radishes, or shredded carrots could be great, too.
How do you make this keto salad recipe?
First, prepare your Chaffle Bowl. Combine all of the ingredients and mix well. Add to a preaheated Waffle Bowl Maker that has been sprayed with nonstick spray. Add two tablespoons of the batter and cook for 3-4 minutes, or until there is no longer any steam coming from the maker. Set aside.
Next, layer your salad greens, juicy chicken, chopped tomato, crumbled bacon, low carb ranch and salt and pepper. And you’re done – It’s the perfect keto lunch, ready in just minutes!
Tips for the best low carb chicken salad
- Be sure to not overfill your waffle bowl maker with batter. You only need two tablespoons.
- Change it up! This would be the perfect opportunity to use up leftover holiday turkey, ham, or beef, too. If you’re vegetarian, feel free to omit the chicken, swap it for tofu, or grill up some portobello mushrooms and slice up those instead. You could even make it a taco salad with some taco meat, avocado, red onion, lime juice, cilantro, salsa, sour cream, etc.
- Add different veggies! Mushrooms, zucchini, bell peppers, cucumber, even black olives would all be delicious in this keto recipe. Whatever your favorite toppings are for low carb salads will work.
- Don’t assemble until ready to eat. Chaffle bowls can get soggy if they soak up moisture, so the clock is ticking once you add your veggies, chicken, and dressing. Feel free to make the bowls ahead of time and store in the fridge or freezer, then crisp them up in the air fryer or oven and assemble just before you’re ready to eat.
Is this keto salad recipe good for keto meal prep?
This is a fantastic low carb meal prep recipe. It can be a little hard to transport these keto salad bowls without breaking the bowl, so I just kept the chaffle bowls in a separate container. In another container I had the chicken, bacon, tomatoes, greens already sprinkled with salt and pepper. I grabbed a bottle of ranch and I was good to go!
How to store these salad bowls
The Chaffle Bowls will stay fresh in the fridge for up to 48 hours. Store in the fridge in a glass or plastic container with an airtight lid, or in a plastic bag. For longer storage, freeze your chaffle bowls! Simply allow the bowls to completely cool, then stack with a piece of parchment paper between each bowl so they don’t stick. Place the stack into a freezer bag and enjoy within 3 months for the best taste and texture.
I do not recommend storing this salad bowl once it has been mixed- the juice from the vegetables can make the chaffle bowl a little soggy. So if you are preparing beforehand, it is best to store your chaffle bowls and salad ingredients separately.

Sounds great, but I am a single person. Can the Chaffee bowl ingredients mixed together be able to be kept in the fridge. I would cut the recipe in half but not sure about the 3 eggs.
Hi Trish, yes I have stored the batter in the fridge up to 3 days and the chaffles turn out great. Enjoy!
